Songs can be downloaded from a selection of almost 3,000 in the SingStore, and there are also demo songs available for free. The latter will only work for single-player mode, though, but it will pick up everyone singing in the room, allowing for a chorus of players to join in.
The competitive singing game can then be played using official SingStar microphones or wireless headsets, other common USB microphones, or just the built-in mic on the PlayStation Eye camera.
